Media Homework

In order to gather research for my pre production I used website to create a survey and then I proceeded to send the link to my classmates so that I could get an idea of what type of music people like and what they think a certain music genre CD cover should look or the features of the cover. I also asked people that were not in my class so that I could get a wide range of answers with allowed me to narrow it down to the most common responses that I got. The general response I got was that the people that did the survey and that I spoke to like R&B music. This helped me to look at the different styles of R&B CD covers.

I decided to make my target audience 15-20 year olds. This is because the people that I asked about which type of music they liked were ranging from 15- 20 year olds and R&B seemed to be the most popular music choice therefore it made sense to use that age gap for my target audience. I have also realised that my target audience will want to see an appealing CD cover that stands out from the rest as it needs to catch their eye, this is why I am using a very basic and strict colour scheme which is different from the standard R&B CD covers. Another way I am able to attract my target audience is to use images that they can relate to and understand, which will make them want to buy the CD even more.

Our group decided to use this image for our representation task. We chose to represnt Beyonce's 'Girls run the world' album. The objects we chose are all girls or women's accessories whether that be make up or jewellrey. Our group decided to use these objects to represent Beyonce because we chose to represent gender within the media and we felt like Beyonce challenges the stereotypical way that females are represented as she is seen as strong and independent.
The TIME magazine has published an edition on the 28th of september which features Benedict Cumberland.

Main image:
The main image is a single photo of Benedict Cumberland. The photo is a close up of his face and is in low key lighting which can show his facial expression. Also he is sitting in a very relaxed position like he is calm, this could reflect the 'playing genius' cover line that is on the side of the image. Also he is in a suit with his buttons undone at the top, this shows his class and could resemble the class of audience that they are trying to target in this magazine.

The representation is negative and describes the attackers as a gang of yobs. Gangs are often a word given to a group of teenagers who will be given the stereotype of being in the underclass. However the representation of the man is positive. This is because he is called a 'good samaritan' and the picture of his injuries makes the audience sympathise for him. As well as this he was in the pub on the night of the attack, meaning that he is just a normal working class man.

There is only one main character that is a woman throughout prison break is sara tancredi. Throughout the series she is being captured and portrayed as a damsel in distress which makes her look weak and in need of a man to save her. This is showing the stereotype of women and this may be why the producer has chose her to be portrayed in this way. All of the men in the series are seen as big and strong again showing the stereotypical representation of men.

The bucket list is a good representation of age. It goes against the stereotype of old age people and they way that they are conditioned to be. For example it shows them skydiving which not all old age people would do. The producer has done this because it makes for an interesting and funny film because it goes against the norms of being old.

Harold and Kumar is a good representation of race. It has a lot of stereotypes of asian people, Harold for example works in an office doing a lot of worked based on numbers, and Kumar's parents are trying to get him to be a doctor or a surgeon. This clip is positive towards race, although it uses stereotypes of both Harold and Kumar's race, it does it comically, because it is done in this way it shows that the producer does not think that race is a problem in films, therefore uses it to a comical effect.

'Orange is the new black' is an american series that is the story of a woman that gets sent to prison. What makes it interesting is the way that it goes against the stereotype that inmates will turn to homosexuality just for their own pleasure as they are only incarcerated with their own gender. In the series it shows inmates turning to homosexuality because they start to get feelings for the other inmates, not for pleasure. Because the women's change in sexuality is not just for pleasure, it promotes it in a positive way. This is is sending a positive message to the viewers and gives an insight to current issues in today's society.

The editor has chosen to show this contestant on tv for a couple of reasons. One is that women will find him attractive and appealing because he has the singer look. Also he has an emotional story about his brother who died last year, this makes the audience feel sorry for him and the judges. He uses this to his advantage to sing a second song and uses his emotions about his brother to sing a better song.
